UVigo researchers lead a European project to identify new protein sources

PROMISEANG is a research project funded by the European Union with a budget of 4.5 million euros, for the development of new protein sources from various marine food wastes.

The project, led by Professor Jesús Simal from the University of Vigo, also has the participation of partners from Portugal, Germany, Poland and Hungary. The inaugural meeting took place this weekend in Poland, where the foundations were laid for 48 months of work, during which alternative proteins obtained through microbial fermentation of non-conventional marine sources will be investigated, with the aim of developing the next generation of food, feed and other non-food technological applications, including sectors such as biomedicine, pharmacy and cosmetics.

This project seeks to take advantage of underused marine sources, such as marine invertebrate waste, macroalgae and industrial biowaste, to develop alternative proteins through biomass fermentation. The process will generate a novel protein-enriched microbial biomass, thus meeting market requirements for biological applications in food, feed and other non-food uses such as cosmetics.
